Book Review: Light Roast Larceny (Coastal Coffee Mystery, #1) by Kate Montgomery

Light Roast Larceny: A Coastal Coffee MysteryLight Roast Larceny: A Coastal Coffee Mystery by Kate Montgomery
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Great characters and an intriguing plot combine for an absorbing tale of mystery and murder.

Light Roast Larceny is the first book in Kate Montgomery’s intriguing new Coastal Coffee Mystery series. With its likable and relatable characters and fascinating plot, I was completely absorbed by the story from start to finish and absolutely ready for book two.

The main character, Graciella “Cici” Larkin, is a recently laid-off twenty-something with two feisty little dogs and Brad, her very supportive husband, and living in a well-established Miami suburb of long-term older residents. When Francine, an elderly neighbor, has her wallet stolen and encounters disrespect and dismissal by local law enforcement, Cici steps in to advocate for serious action. While at the police station, she meets new employee and Louisiana bayou transplant, Officer Chandra Boudreaux, and the young women’s friendship quickly grows over their shared love of coffee and the delicious local breakfast pastries. They soon discover there’s been a rash of petty thefts occurring in Cici’s neighborhood over the previous couple of months, all targeting elderly residents who are treated in the same disappointing manner as Francine, and all dismissed with the pronouncement that they’ve just lost or forgotten where they’ve put their missing items.

I really enjoyed this story for its fun characters and plot revolving around the elderly victims. Cici is such a well-developed, relatable, and memorable character with her reactions to being suddenly laid off, dealing with her unpleasant, self-appointed neighborhood watchdog, Edna Sparks, and her daily struggle for inspiration and producing an edible meal for the dinner table each night. Brad is a joy as he lends his support to her joint investigation with her new energetic, go-getter friend, Chandra. All three are dedicated coffee and breakfast enthusiasts, and the descriptions of their various meals and ethnic pastries are mouthwatering and serve to introduce Chandra to a new love interest.

While elderly victims are not new in fiction, this story takes this theme further, with the wholesale gaslighting of the victims taking centerstage. Readers ‘of a certain age’ or those with close relationships with older individuals will easily relate to these victims’ treatment. This tactic literally angered me as I read, and I could relate to the characters’ frustration and humiliation. These vital, competent adults were, within seconds of the start of their interview, discredited and deemed unreliable and unworthy of further attention because of their perceived age.

The perpetrators are gradually revealed, and a key element of the case remained elusive until almost the very end. However, even after the final reveal, I had questions regarding the motive for the mostly petty thefts. There doesn’t seem to be much return on investment for the extensive setup, as according to the story itself, until Gerald, the values of the items involved were minor and many of sentimental value only. Still, the story was a page-turner; I had to find out how it would all turn out.

I recommend LIGHT ROAST LARCENY to cozy mystery fans, especially those with an affinity for coffee or those who enjoy stories featuring more mature characters.

Book Review: A Pawsome Summer for Murder (Samantha Davies Mystery, #7) by S.A. Kazlo

A Pawsome Summer For Murder (Samantha Davies Mystery)A Pawsome Summer For Murder by S.A. Kazlo
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A murder during a charity fishing tournament nets a number of suspects.

A Pawsome Summer for Murder is the seventh book in author S.A. Kazlo’s fun, cozy mystery series featuring Samantha Davies, her friends, family, and pet dachshund, Porkchop. While participating in a charity fishing tournament to benefit the local animal shelter, Sam hooks a big one. However, what she reels in is the body of a local woman who had been protesting the catch-and-release event, advocating on behalf of the fish. With the unique discovery of the victim’s body and quirky characters, many of whom become possible suspects in the woman’s murder, even readers new to the series will be able to follow the story and enjoy the mystery.

The main character is divorcee Samantha Davies, who is now engaged to the town of Wings Falls, New York, lead police detective Hank Johnson, which is convenient since she has frequently been involved in several recent murder investigations. Sam is sweet and determined to help get to the truth behind Luna Wheeler’s death. She is assisted by her cousin Candie and dachshund sidekick, Porkchop. The story was an entertaining and quick mystery, perfect for a laid-back evening with a book.

I recommend A PAWSOME SUMMER FOR MURDER to cozy mystery enthusiasts and dachshund lovers.

Book Review: The Calendar by WM Gunn

The CalendarThe Calendar by W.M. Gunn
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A suspenseful tale of an asteroid on a collision course with the Earth.

The Calendar by WM Gunn is a suspenseful end-of-times tale about the approach of a giant asteroid on a trajectory that will cause it to collide with the Earth or pass so close that the planet will be destroyed in less than a year’s time. The story is filled with how humans, once they know of their impending annihilation, react to the news.

The author creates numerous diverse vignettes written around a main storyline, stories within the story, featuring the scientists who discover the approaching asteroid, the world leaders who must decide whether or to alert the populace and, if so when the optimum time to do so would occur, and how several regular families or couples or single individuals choose to spend their final days. Each is a special capsule of human emotions and choices made.

The plot evolves quickly as scientists and politicos scramble for solutions or safety for themselves in some cases. Heroic attempts to divert the terminal event are launched; their participants are fully aware that they are making the ultimate sacrifice so humanity will have a chance at survival. On Earth, while some take advantage to wreak havoc or settle old scores, many more choose to face destruction with courage, kindness, and compassion for their fellow man. While tragic and eerie, these stories are also uplifting and hopeful, even as the end comes. The stories are relatable and felt so authentic I couldn’t put the book down; I had to know what would happen to these people.

With its suspenseful plot of inescapable doom and vignettes of hope and redemption, I recommend THE CALENDAR to readers of apocalyptic and end-of-times tales.

SYNOPSIS:

Growing up in a dead-end, Thames Valley town like Marden Combe, Kai knows there’s no escape without a lot of talent, hard work—and luck.

Two weeks before the Clayton Paul Blues Band plans to set out on tour to Germany, their singer quits, and drummer Kai takes matters in hand. With bandmates Jake and Jamie, they recruit a talented new singer—the enigmatic Dominique—as the new face of the band and set out on the road to Berlin in a rickety white van.

Dogged by mishaps and under-rehearsed, the band stumbles through their first shows, zig-zagging between chaos and brilliance. But as the first gig in Berlin draws near, the band begins to gel. They’re clicking with their audience, and even the stone-hearted Kai starts to crumble under the spell, first of Dom and then…of Lars.

As the end of the tour approaches, Kai must make hard choices. Dom? But she’s keeping a dark secret. Lars? Not after the acrimony of their last parting. The band? Or will that dream crumble too?

So I pulled the mic stand around to the side of the kit, set it up so it didn’t get in the way of the hi-hat, and we gave it a go. I picked ‘I Come from the Blues’, which was one of Clay’s compositions. It had fallen out of the set sometime in the last six months, but I loved Clay’s soft, jazzy butterscotch vocals on it. If it had been up to me, it would still be in the set, but Clay had said he wanted to move on.

Where did I come from? I come from the blues.
Where am I going? I’m going to lose.
Where is my future? I’m sure I have none.
Where is my hope? My hope is all gone.

I’ve always sung along—off-mic and under my breath—so I didn’t have any trouble fitting the words in the right places. And I’ve got decent pitch and rhythm. So I think I did all right.

Now, Jamie wouldn’t meet my eye.

“What?” I demanded. “What was wrong with that?”

He mumbled something.

“I can’t hear you, bro. What did he say, Jake?”

Jake looked away. He didn’t want to get involved in any squall between me and my brother. Besides, he’d used up all his words for the day.

“I’m not sure how to put this, Kai. You’ve got a good voice. It’s, well…not very, well, rock’n’roll. No…grit. Too pure. Sorry.”

“I see.”

“Look, we’ll ask around our friends. Social media. There’s got to be something online.”

I didn’t say anything. I was thinking lots though. About how I’d discovered that this was something I really wanted to do.

GUEST POST:

Please welcome William Campbell Powell, the author of our featured book, to the blog today to discuss some of the musical elements of his latest book. He brings with him some prepared playlists and original musical compositions related to the story!

Karen/Guatemala Paula: Welcome, William!

William Campbell Powell: TEARDOWN combines elements of LGBTQIA+ romance with Road Trip fiction, and - with its focus on music - might sit alongside Taylor Jenkins Reid’s ‘Daisy Jones and the Six’ (2016) or Dawnie Walton’s ‘The Final Revival of Opal & Nev’ (2022), or - with its focus on (Kai's) gender-ambiguity and relationships - near Camille Perry’s ‘When Katie Met Cassidy’ (2018) or Beth O’Leary’s ‘The Road Trip’ (2022).

For the first playlist, I’ve tried to give a flavour of what Kai’s band might sound like with Dom singing, so I’ve chosen modern female artists like Bonnie Raitt, Beth Hart, Rory Block or Susan Tedeschi where I can find them.

I’ve included versions by the late Eva Cassidy, too – they are just inspirational. Keep a box of tissues close by.

Modern covers

Listen on Spotify

For the diehard blues lovers, there’s a similar playlist, but with more of the originals thrown in. They’ll be rather crackly.

Classic covers

Are there any original songs? As it happens, there are. For a combination of plot needs and copyright reasons, wherever I quote lyrics, they have to be my own songs. So, there are six songs in total – five of them are completely original, and the sixth is a re-working of a traditional song (Whiskey in the Jar) with significantly changed lyrics.

I’ve recorded the main 5 and you can listen to themHERE! They are demo quality, rather than production quality. My own voice isn’t very bluesy, and not even slightly female – I’m a definite tenor.

I hope to re-record them to production quality in the near future, in a key that suits a blues lady singer, but in the meantime, I trust that these tracks will help you imagine Dom, leading Kai’s band.

Happy listening.

Book Review: Cruises, Cocktails, and Corpses (Taryn O'Kelly Mystery, #2) by Michelle L. Clifton

Cruises, Cocktails, and Corpses: (A Taryn O'Kelly Mystery - Book 2)Cruises, Cocktails, and Corpses: by Michelle L. Clifton
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Action-packed follow-up to the series debut!

Cruises, Cocktails, and Corpses is the second book in author Michelle L. Clifton’s intriguing Taryn O’Kelly Mystery series, and it is an action-packed follow-up to the series debut. After the events of the previous book, party planner Taryn O’Kelly and her new boyfriend, Alex Cruz, need a little getaway to properly wind down, recuperate, and enjoy each other’s company; however, their simple plan encounters a couple of stumbling blocks. First, Robert Campbell, Taryn’s still besotted former fiancé, has booked the same cruise, intent on winning her back or at least being an ever-present third wheel. Secondly, on their first full day, they discover the body of a female crew member lying on the floor of their cabin, and become the number one suspects in her death? Taryn, Alex, and Robert must do their own digging to clear their names.

Taryn and Alex are a sweet but lusty couple with eyes only for each other, and the story is sprinkled throughout with the AFTER scenes of their mutual desire. Robert wishes Taryn was a little more forgiving, nostalgic for old times, or at least open-minded enough to give him another chance. Still, after the couple is detained by security, all three are seriously focused on investigating the death.

While this book could be enjoyed as a standalone novel, it would be best read after having enjoyed the previous one. The story is packed with action, romance, and fun cruise activities that may have you ready to book your own excursion. I recommend CRUISES, COCKTAILS, AND CORPSES to mystery readers who enjoy a more adult romantic element in their stories.

Book Review: When Sparks Fly (Pinegrove FD, #1) by Libby Kay

When Sparks Fly (A Pinegrove FD Novel Book 1)When Sparks Fly by Libby Kay
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A satisfying story of hope and healing ushers in this new Southern romantic series.

When Sparks Fly is the first book in author Libby Kay’s new southern romance series set in Pinegrove, Georgia, and features two broken but good-hearted people who both need hope, healing, and a new love. Recently disappointed in love, Fire Lieutenant Trevor Mays receives the news that his rival in love has also gotten the promotion to Captain that Trevor deserved. His dream job as a firefighter, following in the footsteps of his father to eventually become chief, suddenly becomes grim as the new captain deliberately tries to make his life as miserable as possible.

Meanwhile, in nearby Savannah, Whitney Kerr discovers the long-time boyfriend, who just dumped her less than a month before, proposing to another woman, captured on live television during a baseball game. At a loss for what to do with her life, she embarks on an impromptu road trip, ending up in Pinegrove, the site of many happy childhood memories. Tired and needing a hotel room, Whitney is dismayed to learn every hotel in the small town is completely booked due to its renowned 4th of July celebrations that are just kicking off. However, she is drawn under the wing of the kind, widowed Daisy Mays, who happens to have a handsome and eligible firefighter son who needs a breath of fresh air, just like Whitney, to breeze into his life.

Whitney and Trevor have much in common when it comes to their recent and unfortunate love lives. It was lovely seeing these two hurt souls find their way to each other with the help of Daisy and others. Both are kind and generous people who you can’t help but root for to find their happily ever after with each other while growing individually into better people at the same time.

The plot is well-paced, and the story is easy to enjoy. It is also a little lighthearted as both recognize that their stories are the perfect fodder for a romance novel. The tale unfolds from both Whitney’s and Trevor’s points of view, so readers get to see both sides of their story. This couple seems made for each other, and their cautious but strong attraction to each other is almost palpable. This was an interesting and satisfying story to sink into and just enjoy.

I recommend WHEN SPARKS FLY to romance readers who enjoy second-chance romances or small-town Georgia settings.

Children's Book Review: It's Watching by Lindsay Currie

It's WatchingIt's Watching by Lindsay Currie
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This one even gave Mom the shivers!

It’s Watching by Lindsay Currie is a new middle-grade horror story that even gave this Boys’ Mom the willies! Three ambitious young seventh-grade reporters want to secure their spot on their school’s newspaper, so they hatch a plan to score the story of the year by proving or debunking a local ghostly legend. But heading off into the haunted cemetery on Halloween night to, hopefully, photograph “The Lady in White” isn’t their only mistake.

I absolutely loved the three main characters, Josie, Alison, and Jackson. Their relationships and camaraderie were fun and authentic, and their back-and-forth banter was delightful. Of course, as a parent, I was not a fan of their lying to their parents and risk-taking, but that’s where the plot gains its traction for what’s to come. The author skillfully incorporates creepy cellphone messages and ghostly computer use into the tale to really induce some shocking moments and clues. The cellphone messages spooked me to no end!

While the kids could have thrown in the towel just due to the worsening weather, they are gutsy enough to continue with their original plan, so points to them. However, the creepy Uber driver, the fact that they knew they were breaking the law by going into the cemetery after hours and being aware that the police regularly staked out the area were all red flags that this was not a GOOD plan. The consequences make for a compelling mystery, plenty of scares, and an overall riveting read.

I recommend IT’S WATCHING to hardy readers of middle-grade horror.

ENJOY AN EXCERPT:

As hard as she tried to hold back the tears, they streamed down her cheeks, hot and heavy. She took the back stairs to her office, desperate to conceal her emotions. Overwhelmed with grief from losing a patient, guilt for not saving her, and the weight of her responsibilities and personal struggles came crashing down on her. The horrifying reality of that moment hit her like a jolt: Shelly had tragically succumbed to her injuries, leaving Jon to pull her lifeless body from the wreckage. The image of her lifelong friend—full of vibrant life and laughter—now lost, filled the air with a haunting silence that would never fade. Every detail of that night lingered in her heart, serving as a constant reminder of a friendship cut short and the relentless grip of grief that soon followed.

She remembered the rush of air when the ambulance bay doors opened. Kati slowly turned to see a stretcher being pushed in, and her chest tightened. She glanced at Will and Jon, then back at the stretcher.

“Stop,” she choked out, but no one heard her desperate plea. Kati stopped in front of the stretcher. The world stood still as she pulled back the sheet covering it. A loud gasp escaped her lips as she stumbled back, feeling dizzy and nauseous. Shelly was gone. The shock and grief hit Kati like a physical blow, making her ears ring and the room spin around her. At that moment, everything went dark as she fought to stay conscious.

But two strong arms encircled her, and a familiar voice whispered, “I’ve got you, Baby. It’s okay.” Kati recognized Jon’s voice, bringing comfort and pain as she leaned into him for support.

Losing Shelly to death and Jon to the demons that haunted him was a constant source of pain for Kati. Now, the teacher who had profoundly influenced her life was also gone. Guilt gnawed at her for not being there enough for Jon during his struggles, yet she needed to prioritize her mental health. Despite her best efforts to maintain her well-being, she still carried regret and sorrow within her. Before entering the hallway, she dabbed her eyes, straightened her lab coat, and proceeded to her office.

As Kati walked into her office, she couldn't shake the feeling that she needed to check on Jon. Tonight was Will's bachelor party, and Jon often spiraled into a dark place when he drank. She wondered if Will had organized the party to keep an eye on Jon. Shaking her head, she hoped everything would be alright. They had planned a quiet evening at the ranch with a bonfire and card games. However, Kati felt guilty for not checking in on Jon more often. Although she had noticed his infrequent visits to the ranch, she had never found out why. She decided to text him to check how he was doing.

Kati took out her phone, typed a message, erased it, and started again. She was uncertain what to say and how to convey her concern for Jon.

Kati: Hey, how are you? Will you be coming to the ranch tonight?

She stared at the phone, waiting. Five minutes passed without a response.

Kati: Jon, please let me know if you’re okay. Just say I’m alive.

Another ten minutes passed, and Kati wasn’t sure whether to be angry or scared.

Kati: I swear to God, if you don’t respond, I will come to your house and take your cat.

Jon: I DARE YOU. DOUBLE-DOG DARE YOU!!!!!

Read an excerpt:

“I’m suspicious of people who don’t like dogs, but I trust a dog when it doesn’t like a person”
Bill Murray

The massive bridge from mainland Washington to the village of Orca Cove lay before me like the highway to hell. Not that Orca Cove’s a bad place. Quite the contrary. It’s just that heights scared the bejesus out of me—and it was going to take every bit of courage I could muster to cross it.

The sky was hazy as the sun threatened to burn off oppressive dark gray clouds. Spikes at the top of the bridge disappeared into the fast-moving fog. The looming structure reminded me of green metal toothpicks, supporting a wobbly death trap in the sky. It took my breath away and not in a good way.

Come on, Charlie. Put on your big girl pants and suck it up.

I tried to concentrate on the quaint town on the other side and the refuge it would provide. But all I could think of as I navigated my rental car across the bridge was that the Pacific Northwest was long overdue for an earthquake. Wouldn’t it be my luck to be on this bridge when it happened? I imagined I would feel suspended in the air forever during the plunge, but death would come quickly as the ice-cold water below swallowed us whole.

“I know,” I said, glancing down at my buff Cocker Spaniel, Noah, fast asleep on the seat beside me. “Stop being so dramatic.” But as I white-knuckled our way across the bridge, Noah was oblivious. He continued to sleep off the meds I’d given him to make the flight from New Jersey more tolerable. His snore reminded me of what an overweight lumberjack might sound like after a few too many beers. Hard to believe such a rattling noise came out of a twenty-two-pound fur ball, so adorable people often mistook him for Lady from Lady and the Tramp. A thorn in my side, but I was prone to overreacting when it came to my boy.

Four miles seemed a long time to contemplate one’s death. Cars behind me honked as I drove just under the speed limit, my eyes intent on the few feet of road in front of me. I tried to stifle the hysteria that rose in my chest and choked me.

Deep breaths, Charlie.

I did my best to ignore the impatient drivers behind us. Fate threw in a pack of serious bicyclists, making the bridge even more narrow. I focused on the toned calves pumping the petals on the bike of the woman in front of me, while wishing there was another way onto the island. But my unemployed status and dwindling bank account didn’t allow for luxuries like a private boat or seaplane.

Exiting the bridge, I let out a long breath. “That was stressful,” I said to Noah.

More snoring. Well, it was terrifying for me.

The sleepy town always made me feel like I’d entered a time warp and had surfaced in the 1950s. Quaint buildings, with brightly painted mismatched architecture for each mom-and-pop shop, boutique, and restaurant lined the streets. Because orcas frequented the area and drew many tourists, everything had a nautical theme, and murals of killer whales and other sea life decorated the buildings. Despite its appeal, the town remained a best-kept secret, and even during the height of the season, crowds were few and far between.

Couples walked hand-in-hand down sidewalks, others pushed strollers, and many had a canine friend on a leash. I knew from previous visits that many of the residents were retired, and there was a high population of artists on the island.

Back on solid ground and with this storybook town before me, calm released like water from a dam, washing my trepidation out to sea.

Not wanting to visit my aunt empty handed, I stopped at the town bakery and bought two giant molasses cookies, my aunt’s favorite.

As I started up the hill to Aunt Jo-Jo’s house, I felt excited at the prospect of seeing her again. She was not only my favorite relative, but she’d also been my savior growing up when my mom went off the deep end—which was more often than I’d like to admit. I spent snippets of my childhood on this island and some of my best memories were of my time here. But I’d been remiss, having not visited her since my uncle passed away about five years ago. Life had gotten in the way. First, there was college and then the life-changing decision I’d made to leave my tedious corporate job for the police academy. Like most people my age, I was perpetually broke, and travel wasn’t in the cards.

But my aunt seemed to understand, and we kept in touch through email and weekly phone calls. She was still my sounding board when dealing with my mom’s antics. Those calls kept us close, but there was nothing like face-to-face time.

Aunt Jo-Jo’s Craftsman house perched on the hillside like a proud bird overlooking its kingdom. From it, she had a fantastic view of the water and the, gulp, bridge. The house was painted royal blue with white shutters. Colorful gardens surrounded the property, and a small dog park flanked the west side of the house. A banner reading Future Home of Orca Cove’s First Agility Course stretched across the fence. A handful of dogs frolicked on lush grass while owners sat on benches in animated conversation.

A more modern structure sat behind the home, painted the same shade of blue. A hotel for dogs–Wiggle Butt Manor.

Ten individual rooms were decorated with children’s furniture, on which the four-legged guests slept. Each room had a theme. There was a One Hundred, and One Dalmatians suite, a Lassie room, and one had French Bulldogs and a Paris theme.

I parked in the gravel driveway behind a mud-splattered Jeep Cherokee with an I love Golden Retrievers bumper sticker peeking out from beneath the dirt.

Rousing Noah with a quick belly rub, I got out of the car and stretched. The chill of the late September air reminded me that fall was around the corner. “Come on, Boo.” I slapped my thigh.

Noah’s flowing ears swayed as he jumped to the ground. He followed me like a shadow as I walked up to the pet hotel and rapped on the door. When no one answered, I opened it and stuck my head inside. “Hello?”

Barking erupted from the back room when we entered. The lobby held a desk and two overstuffed chairs, along with a giant bucketful of dog toys. A collage of photos taken of guests over the years hung on the wall. Noah gave me a look that said: what the heck, I thought I was the only one.

“You’ve led a sheltered life,” I said. “You’re not one of a kind.”

Noah was not a “dog person,” and he couldn’t care less about the canines eager to greet him. He glanced toward the barking dogs, yawned, and then leaped onto a chair and curled into a compact ball. I opened the door that led to the pet rooms and made my way down the hall. A wall of guest suites was to my left. Dogs of all sizes and colors stuck their noses out of low, barred windows to greet me. I bent down and said hello to each of them. I didn’t want to be rude.

The door at the end of the hall opened as Martha stepped inside. “Oh, dear!” She patted her chest as if she needed to restart her heart. “Charlie! You scared me half to death.”

Martha had worked with Aunt Jo-Jo for as long as I could remember. They argued constantly, but they’d take a bullet for each other. Martha’s curly gray hair looked like a startled ferret on her head, and her glasses were askew. She wore faded overalls and lime green Crocs.

“Sorry to scare you,” I said. “We just got here. Is everything all right?”

“One of the dogs is AWOL,” Martha said. “That teenager we hired must have failed to latch the kennel, and when I opened the hotel door, the slippery rascal bolted.”

I grabbed a leash off the hook. “What’s the breed?”

Martha scratched her head. “Basic brown dog. Size of a lab, soul of a scoundrel. Answers to Maya, if she’d ever bother.”

“I’m on it,” I said.

Heading back to my car, I called for Noah to join me. Not buying into the urgency, he lumbered off the chair and followed. Back in the rental car, we set off down the street, driving up and down the hilly roads that made up the neighborhood. Charming houses had well-manicured lawns, and vibrant flowers were abundant.

I watched the road while quickly scanning the bushes for a hiding dog. I wished I would have asked how long Maya had been missing. A dog like that could make it to the main road in minutes. I prayed a car wouldn’t hit the runaway.

I soon spotted a tan blur leap over a six-foot fence three streets down, disappearing into a backyard. Slamming on the brakes, my arm automatically jerked out to stop Noah from flying off the seat. I told him to stay, grabbed the leash, and jumped out of the car. I was five-foot-ten, and for once, I didn’t curse my height.

Standing on my toes, I could easily see over the fence and into the yard. The dog chased a flock of chickens while a middle-aged woman dressed in a low-cut top and shorts that might have fit her twenty years ago yelled at Maya to stop. Yielding a broom, she chased the dog in circles with little effect.

“I’m here to help,” I yelled over the fence. “Maya, come here!”

If the dog could flip me off, she would have. The look she gave me had the same result. Maya was on a tear.

“Do something,” the woman said, near tears.

I put my foot onto a nearby wheelbarrow, pulled myself up on my forearms, and swung my leg over the fence like they’d taught me in the police academy. Dropping into a crouch on the other side, I straightened and stepped between Maya and a chicken seconds before what would become the last moment of the feathered creature’s life.

“Come here.” I leaned down to the dog’s level and motioned her forward.

But Maya had other ideas. She charged at me, knocking me on my backside before pushing off me like a diving board, ready for round two.

I struggled for breath as I reached up, and almost caught her mid-flight, but she dodged me, leaving me laying on the ground flat on my back.

I got to my knees, then staggered to my feet. “Okay,” I said, out of breath. “You win, you slippery devil.”

I swear she laughed at me.

Out of ideas, I looked at the woman still wielding the broom like a baseball bat, and the chicken, who ruffled her feathers as if she was trying to pull herself together. They didn’t look impressed by my ungraceful moves.

Apparently satisfied that she’d proven her point, Maya walked slowly over to me and ducked her head, allowing me access to her collar. Getting a firm hold of it, I gave Maya a nod. She’d earned my respect. Pushing my hair out of my face, I turned to the woman. “Sorry about that. We’ll get out of your way.”

Neither the woman nor the chicken looked particularly grateful.

Dragging the dog, who continued to lunge at the flock behind us, we made our way back to the car, where Noah still snored undisturbed. Yin and Yang, I thought as I shoved Maya into the backseat.

“Wait,” the woman called, running toward me.

Keys in hand, I paused by the door.

“You dropped this.” She handed me my phone, covered in mud and what I guessed was chicken poop.

I carefully took it, holding it by the corners, trying not to gag. “Awe, thanks.”

“And thanks to you, too, Maya,” I said under my breath.

I got into the car and looked in the rear-view mirror, about to back out of the space, when I spied Maya biting down on one of the cookies I’d planned to bring to my aunt. A twinkle sparkled in her eyes, and she held my gaze as she swallowed.

So, this was how it was going to be?

Cindy Goyette

Armed with a handgun and a word processor, Immigration Officer Cindy Goyette spent her nights creating fictional friends to help pass the lonely hours between border crossers. A portable black-and-white TV cancelled the unexplained noises coming from the ancient jail cells in the creepy basement. The resulting book will stay in the closet where it belongs, but the seed was planted and she’s been writing ever since.

Cindy spent the ensuing years as a probation officer, dealing with hardened criminals with hard-luck stories that sometimes kept her up at night. Every day was an adventure. She survived by seeing humor in situations where she could find it. She joked about writing a book and then she did just that.

The Probation Case Files Mystery series books, OBEY ALL LAWS and EARLY TERMINATION incorporates the wild and crazy life of a probation officer with issues currently in the news. Cindy’s history with flirtatious felons who thought they were charmers and addicts who denied the drugs in their pockets, claiming they’re wearing their friend’s pants have given her ample material for the books she now writes. Released JANUARY 2024 and January 2025

Cindy has a habit of adopting dogs who get into as much mischief as her probationers. A vet told her, Maya – a basic brown miscreant mixed breed – was lucky Cindy had taken her home because no one else would have put up with her antics. So why not give Maya her own series? Thus, Diamond in the Ruff: A Wiggle Butt Manor Mystery was born. Released May 6, 2025

Born in New Jersey, Cindy lived in Phoenix for twenty years. She now makes her home in Washington state with her husband and two cocker spaniels.

Review:

5 stars!

Clever, twisty murder mystery with a great canine theme!

Diamond in the Ruff is the first book in author Cindy Goyette’s cozy canine-themed Wiggle Butt Manor Mystery series set on a small island off the Washington coast and featuring a strong young female protagonist and her companion dog, a lovable cocker spaniel named Noah. With its wonderful main characters, both human and canine, and an intriguing, complex plot, I didn’t want to put this one down.

When Charlie Calderbank returns to Orca Cove, where she spent many happy childhood visits, it is to help out at her Aunt Jo-Jo’s dog hotel while her aunt recuperates and undergoes rehab after a near-fatal car accident. But while walking dogs with her aunt’s troubled teenage part-time employee, they discover the body of the owner of a particularly rambunctious charge, floating near the shore, with Jo-Jo’s unique handmade necklace clutched in her hand. As the evidence against Jo-Jo starts to stack up, Charlie initiates her own investigation into who murdered Lucy Masanova and is trying to implicate her aunt.

Charlie is such an interesting and relatable character. Although a life-long dog lover and clearly happy to help out with her aunt’s business, it had always been her dream to be a police officer back in her home state of New Jersey. However, a recent diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis and symptoms affecting her hands and fine motor skills make her career choice no longer viable. Anyone suffering from this incurable disease will find her experiences relatable and authentic. Suddenly out of work, when the call comes about Jo-Jo’s accident, Charlie is able to leave immediately for the Pacific Northwest to help out. The descriptions of her aunt’s island home are entrancing.

The plot, with its different concurrent storylines, moves at a fast pace, and the suspense quickly mounts as someone is seen lurking around the hotel in the dark, the orphaned part-timer is threatened by her sleazy uncle and aunt, and the case against Jo-Jo continues to look bleak. The hunky island police officer is a tempting distraction both for Jo-Jo’s future freedom and Charlie’s heart as she tries to keep him focused on those she pinpoints as better suspects, including Lucy’s own nephew, who arrived suspiciously quick from Georgia, for her murder. With the storylines intertwining, there are a couple of good red herrings to knock off the suspect list before arriving at the shocking revelations of some years-old island secrets and real killer.

I recommend DIAMOND IN THE RUFF to mystery readers who enjoy canine themes, Pacific Northwest settings, underlying romantic potential, and a strong female protagonist.
